There is no single best ERP. There is a best fit for your size, your industry and your operating model. The useful questions are these: How many legal entities do you run? Do you manufacture or distribute physical goods? Do you need SARS-localised VAT and payroll out of the box? Is your team ready for cloud, or do your connectivity and policies favour on-premise?
The systems
Sage Intacct: for multi-entity, finance-led organisations
Cloud-native financial management aimed at organisations running multiple entities, currencies or business units. Its strengths are real-time consolidations, dimensional reporting and automated AP and close workflows. It is SOC 1 and SOC 2 certified, and it is cloud only, with no on-premise version. Typical implementations we deliver run 8 to 16 weeks. It suits financial services, professional services, non-profits and groups. It is not designed to be a deep manufacturing system on its own.
Sage 200 Evolution: for the SA mid-market with inventory and manufacturing
One of the most widely deployed mid-market ERP systems in South Africa, with full financials, inventory, bill of materials, works orders, multi-warehouse stock control and CRM. It is fully localised, so VAT201 returns and SARS-compliant documents are built in. It can be deployed on-premise, hosted or hybrid, which still matters for many South African businesses.
SYSPRO: for complex manufacturing and distribution
SYSPRO was founded in South Africa and has grown into a globally used ERP with particular depth in manufacturing and distribution, covering BOM control, warehouse management and complex supply chains. If your operation is factory-first rather than finance-first, it belongs on your shortlist.
Acumatica: for consumption-based licensing

SAP (Business One and S/4HANA): for large enterprise complexity
SAP remains the default at the top end of the market. S/4HANA is aimed at large enterprises with complex operations, while SAP Business One serves the mid-market. Your budget and appetite for change management need to match the ambition.
Embrace: for locally developed and supported ERP
A South African-developed ERP for medium to large enterprises covering finance, supply chain, manufacturing and asset management, with local support built over decades. Worth evaluating if local development and support are decisive for you.
